Starling Medical College 1848-1907

Lyne Starling (1784-1848), a local, wealthy community leader, almost immediately offered the school $30,000 to build a hospital and medical school under one roof. For the first time in America, medical education and patient care were integrated into one facility, a concept which was years ahead of its time.

Dr. Starling Loving (1855-1906), then professor of materia medica at Starling Medical College, worked to bring the Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis to Columbus to run the hospital. Dr. Loving's leadership was instrumental in making the hospital and the related medical school great successes. In 1865, the hospital became the St. Francis Hospital.

Dr. Loving provided years of valuable service to the medical school. At various times, he served as trustee, professor and Dean. He later served on the first faculty of the Starling-Ohio Medical College.
